Granite Man Elizabeth Lowell 9780786290956 Books Reviews

  • THE STORY Mariah MacKenzie has come back to the Rocking M ranch looking for the brother from whom she was separated from 15 years ago. After years of not belonging, Mariah is looking for a home. She ends up meeting Cash McQueen, her brother's best friend. The attraction between Mariah and Cash is fierce even as Cash has a deep distrust of women.

OPINION This is the weakest of the Rocking M romances. This book has many of the qualities that I love in these romances the dreamy elaborate language and emphasis on the couple to the exclusion of having only a basic plot. I felt that Mariah was a much weaker character than the other women from the series. She has little purpose except to follow Cash around. I am torn about this book because I love so much about it but her character keeps this book from being super. The presence of the recurring characters raise the rating from a 4 to a 4.25.

WORTH MENTIONING This book was first published in the early 1990s as a category romance and thus has limitations in length and in the story typical of books of that era and format.

FINAL DECISION I liked this book although I find Mariah to be the weakest heroine of the series. This book preserves the dreamy romantic quality of the other books in the series but this one has more holes than the others.

CONNECTING BOOKS GRANITE MAN is the third contemporary book in the MacKenzie-Blackthorne or Rocking M series. There is also a historical prequel. None of the prior books are necessary to this book although the historical especially gives some background to this book.

STAR RATING I give this book 4.25 stars.
  • This is fairly dated in the attitudes of the characters but the angst in the story had me emotionally involved almost from the start. The heroine, Mariah, comes across as a weak character and while Lowell tried to show that she wanted to stand up for herself, the story started with how she went to the ranch looking for support from her brother (financially) as she has nowhere else to go. Cash mistrusts her and her motives and thinks she wants a man to do everything for her and while she tries to do things for herself, the impression is that he's pretty much right in thinking this.
Cash has a poor opinion of women (apart from his sister) and treats Mariah horribly for most of the story and it was difficult to see why she would be so attracted to him, apart from physically. While we are told why he has this attitude, he seems very blind towards anything that shows him he could be wrong.
Cash was a strong, masculine hero who finally faced up to his love for Mariah, and she never stopped loving him despite all he put her through. It was a tear jerker and I was emotionally invested in their stories and HEA.
  • I read this when it was first released as a paperback, for Silhouette in March, 1991. I bought all four of this series (at the time there were only four) and the paperbacks have moved with me through many states and many re-readings. Now that they are available as books, I purchased them again and am reading them on my .

I have to say, this IS a good book, but I wasn't impressed with Mariah and frankly I hated Cash periodically throughout the story. Nonetheless, I like the series, love the Rocking M and still love all the Blackthorn brothers even if they weren't MC's in this.
  • Love her books beause they are so romantic, passionate and beautifully written. The characters
in this book, Mariah and Cash meet and fall in love. He didn't trust women because of an awful first
.marriage , but found out he could trust her. They had some problems but worked them out. They
stayed on at the ranch and started a family.
  • I loved all of the books in this series. I consider these some of Elizabeth Lowell's early romance stories. The characters are likeable and the stories have happy endings. These are in the same category as some of Diana Palmer and Linda Lael Miller's romance stories. I think you'll enjoy them. I recommend you read the entire series.
  • This is pretty predictable but enjoyed it, I'm sure there must be more characters meeting up with a soul mate from the Rocking M Ranch. Love to read about that area in Colorado, have visited there a few times.
  • Elizabeth Lowell writes with such depth of emotion, she leaves you breathless!
  • The characterers make the reader remember how the men and women in the rugged West lived and loved. Read and
    enjoy this novel
