The Queensland frontier was more violent than any other Australian colony. Starting with the penal settlement of Moreton Bay in 1824, as white pastoralists moved into new parts of country, violence invariably followed. Over 50,000 Aboriginals were killed on the Queensland frontier, a quarter of the original population. Europeans were killed too, but not in anything like the same numbers. The numbers are truly horrifying, but why isn't this common knowledge? The cover-up began from the start the authorities in Sydney and Brisbane didn't want to know, the Native Police did their deadly work without hindrance, and the pastoralists had every reason to keep it to themselves. Even today, what we know about the killing times is swept aside again and again in favour of the pioneer myth. Conspiracy of Silence is the first systematic account of frontier violence in Queensland. Following in the tracks of the pastoralists as they moved into new lands across the state in the 19th century, Timothy Bottoms identifies the sites and the dates of the massacres, poisonings, and other incidents, including many that no one has documented in print before. Drawing on extensive research and oral history, he explores the colonial mindset and explains how the brutal dispossession of Aboriginal landowners continued over decades.

"This is a meticulously researched expose of what happened to the resident indigenous population of Queensland during the process of occupation by European settlers. It's a heart-rending tale. Having grown up in Central Queensland I knew of the events at Hornet Bank and Cullin-la-Ringo and the Rainworth Fort. I had no idea that the murder and mistreatment of the indigenous population was so vicious and widespread. This book should be included in the secondary school curriculum so that future generations will not be as ignorant of these matters as my generation."

- This is a meticulously researched expose of what happened to the resident indigenous population of Queensland during the process of occupation by European settlers. It's a heart-rending tale. Having grown up in Central Queensland I knew of the events at Hornet Bank and Cullin-la-Ringo and the Rainworth Fort. I had no idea that the murder and mistreatment of the indigenous population was so vicious and widespread. This book should be included in the secondary school curriculum so that future generations will not be as ignorant of these matters as my generation.
- This book was recomended by a friend and gave me a real insite into the atrocities commited against aboriginals. It gave me a greater understanding of their position in Australia today
- This is a book written more with passion than skill. The writing is good, but could be better. The passion is intense and the intent is to provide evidence of a long series of wrongs. Readers should be aware that some of the details of the very many killings of Aboriginals are graphic and quite upsetting. The reader with a background in the history of American native peoples may find some parallels with the savage treatment of the California Indians. I was doing some research on comparative history and just found this book.
It's not entire clear why Queensland has such an exceptionally violent history of killing Aboriginals. Bottoms estimates something around 50,000 Aboriginals were killed (and around 1,500 whites) in hundreds of incidents. The province maintained the Queensland Mounted Police Force from 1848 to1900. This force, comprised of out of area blacks and white officers, was extremely violent, killing men, women and children alike. They were called in in response to natives spearing cattle, horses or sheep, theft or killing whites. Whether it meets the definition of genocide is not clear, but the history comes close to genocide.
Killing was rarely documented. One reason was that a massacre of 28 Aboriginals in 1838 led to murder charges and the hanging of 7 whites. Charges of any kind in Queensland were remarkably rare. Bottoms' book is intended as a correction to Australia's amnesia about this--violence existed elsewhere in the country on a sizable scale, but nothing matched the carnage in Queensland. The idea that Australia has in the past committed atrocity on some scale is fiercely denied by many, including the Murdoch-owned media, Bottoms claims. The incidents Bottoms documents, and puts on some amazing maps, are largely based on older Aborigines' memories, which some claim to be entirely false. Bottoms knows some Aborigines, but the accounts from them come from many decades of recorded testimony. There was also some opposition but such people were harassed and some driven from the colony. The killing years seem to have run from 1840 or so to about 1900.
The main issue was land, appropriated on a large scale by what we Americans would describe roughly as ranchers. Aborigines were cleared off because they killed livestock to eat, sometimes because there was no game left. There was a great deal of variance given the huge size and environmental complexity of Queensland, with the common denominator being extreme violence. Aside from the killing, rape and the kidnapping of Aboriginal children (to become servants) was apparently common. One unusual aspect of the history is the use of poison to kill groups.
A sad history but one important to know about, especially for Australians. But useful for we Americans too, because as bad as our own history has been, except in the case of California, it was not on the same level as in Queensland. - I approached this book with some trepidation due to the subject matter, and that so much had been said and that it is such a contentious issue. I however found that the author had presented an amazing collection of facts and accounts which gave one of the best views on this hidden history of our colonial past. This is a MUST READ for anyone seeking the truth in our Australian colonial history!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough for its account, reference and logical presentation and it would be remarkable if the education dept approved it for listing as reference book. It is an exceptional collection of record and unbiased as I have ever found in any historic account.
A brilliant work by the Author.
